Sustainability in recreation: from perk to basic requirement

Why becoming more sustainable is not only good for the environment, but also for your guests and your business

Sustainable business is no longer a choice, it is necessary

Sustainability has long since ceased to be a trend or a nice-to-have extra. More and more recreation companies realize that they are not only responsible for a pleasant guest experience, but also for their impact on the environment, the climate and society. And your guests also increasingly expect you to make sustainable choices.

That pressure can feel exciting, but it also presents opportunities to future-proof your park or property. Sustainability is no longer a "project," it is part of how you do business.

Why sustainability really matters now

According to CBS figures, more and more people are consciously choosing sustainable vacations. They pay attention to labels, appreciate organic products and are positively surprised by green initiatives such as waste separation or a stay without unnecessary plastic.

At the same time, regulations are also playing a greater role. The Climate Agreement, attention to biodiversity and a growing focus on circular economy make sustainability more urgent and relevant than ever.

What does that mean in practice?

As a recreation entrepreneur, you can apply sustainability in many ways. Consider, for example:

  • Saving energy and water: with solar panels, heat pumps and water-saving installations in cottages and sanitary facilities
  • Separate and reduce waste slim : less disposable plastic, reusable packaging and clear waste points
  • Use of sustainable materials: such as FSC wood for playgrounds and environmentally friendly paint in renovations
  • Strengthen nature and biodiversity: for example, by preserving greenery, native plantings or cooperation with nature organizations
  • Collaborate with the region: by offering local products, involving local entrepreneurs and hiring employees from the area
  • Develop sustainable packages: with cycling and hiking routes, CO₂-neutral stays or educational nature activities

Trade organizations such as RECRON and HISWA-RECRON support you with knowledge, tools and certifications such as Green Key, the international hallmark for sustainable accommodation and attractions.

What are you running into?

Sustainability sounds nice, but in practice it requires time, money and knowledge. Investments in technology are sometimes substantial and not every location is suitable for major modifications. Yet NBTC research shows that you take steps faster if you learn from colleagues. Together you get further.

In addition, there are more and more schemes available that help with financing, such as the Energy Investment Allowance (EIA). This makes sustainability not only feasible, but also attractive.

What does it provide?

The benefits are great, especially in the long run. Consider:

  • Lower energy, water and waste disposal costs
  • A stronger position with environmentally conscious audiences
  • Increased collaborations and access to new markets
  • A park or accommodation ready for the future

Sustainability as a force for the future

More and more entrepreneurs in the recreation industry are already experiencing it: sustainability is not a marketing tool. It is a fundamental choice to remain relevant, attractive and reliable in the future.

And perhaps most importantly, you offer your guests a stay that is right. From experience to impact.
